At GJF Furnishings we are passionate about sustainability, and are proud to be stockist of plastic free household cleaning products. Our love for upcycling also ties in well with our passion for sustainability so we love to turn old pieces of furniture, into something beautiful and prevent these items from going to the tip. Our drinks bottle lamps also help to find a new use for old drinks bottles to turn them into something stylish, and unique.
When shipping items we re-use packaging received from our stock deliveries to give this another use rather than buying in new packaging. We are also looking to move towards a plastic free option for tape. Once we have used up our current stock of tape we will be purchasing the plastic free alternative. It makes no sense to get rid of what we currently have but we will make the right steps with our next purchase of tape.
For furniture deliveries, our couriers use removals blankets to transport the items. This means no packaging used to transport our furniture, whilst still keeping it safe and secure in transit.
In cases where we have surplus packaging materials, we offer them out on our local War on Waste Facebook page as there are always people who require boxes and packaging for moving house. Its great to give these items away for another use, and prevent new boxes being produced and purchased.
We are in the process of reviewing our current suppliers and looking at their approach to sustainability, and using our findings to decide which suppliers to continue with, and identify areas where we could be sourcing more sustainably. We have already decided to not order anymore metal wall plaques due to the single use plastic packaging, so are currently clearing our final stock on these. We have contacted the supplier to see if they can look into a more sustainable approach to their packaging.
We have a lot of handmade products which are made locally, and are packaging free making them far more sustainable. A good example is the candles by Bibi Home which have concrete bases, no packaging (apart from product label), and are even refillable! A great sustainable solution for a popular home fragrance product!
With 9 local traders within a close radius of our shop, restocking is simple, and even in some cases for our Southam traders, is done on foot, giving a far lower carbon footprint.
We use Fill & Co for our home cleaning refill system. We received 20 litre drums which we use to dispense to our glass bottles, along with the bottles and containers brought in by our customers. Once these drums are empty, we contact Fill & Co who come and collect them, clean them, then re-use. This ensures that this refill system is kept as a closed system and prevents additional waste.
As mentioned above, we can also re-fill the Bibi Home candles. Simply bring the concrete pot into store, then Bibi Home will collect it, clean it, then refill it with the new candle in the fragrance of your choice. A much more sustainable way of purchasing candles.
